Oct. 1, 2009

IOWA CITY – Former Iowa fullback Lew Montgomery has been named honorary captain for Saturday’s game against Arkansas State. The Hawkeyes face the Red Wolves in a televised game with kickoff set for 11:02 a.m. in Kinnick Stadium. A few thousand tickets still remain for the contest. Iowa has sold out 38 of its last 39 home games.

Montgomery, a native of Waterloo, IA, lettered as a fullback four times (1989-92) on Hayden Fry coached teams. He played on Iowa teams that reached the Rose Bowl (1990) and the Holiday Bowl (1991).

Lew rushed for 1,093 yards during his career and scored 17 touchdowns. He averaged 4.2 yards per carry. He was honorable mention all-Big Ten in 1991 when he rushed for 498 yards and had eight touchdowns.

Montgomery will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin-flip. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game and on the sidelines during the contest.
