IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated California Sunday, 3-2, at Grant Field. The Hawkeyes move to 4-6 overall with the victory.
“The result was outstanding for us,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We need to take this momentum and use it going forward.”
The visitors struck first in the fourth minute of play as Megan Shimojima scored off a deflection. Claire Dougherty was credited with an assist.
The Black and Gold answered minutes later. Tricia Dean slammed home her fifth goal of the season off a corner. In the 20th minute, the home team scored again. Chelsea Miller tallied her first goal of the season, giving the Hawkeyes a 2-1 halftime lead.
Minutes into the second half, Dean added another goal. The senior scored off a great pass from Leslie Pyle, giving the Hawkeyes a 3-1 advantage.
The Golden Bears added a goal in the 45th minute, cutting the Iowa lead to 3-2. As time expired, California was awarded a corner with no time left on the clock. Freshman goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw made a nice save on a Golden Bear shot to preserve the Hawkeye victory.
Iowa will compete next at Ohio State Oct. 11. Match time is scheduled for noon central time.
