The University of Iowa soccer team played hard Sunday in a physical game with Wisconsin, but the Hawkeyes came up just short in the second overtime, falling 1-0.

“We played hard today and had a lot of positive things on the field, but we need to compete at a higher level,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “The Big Ten is a tough conference. Our goal now is to work hard so we can come out on top of these 1-0 games.”

The Badgers were the first to take aim at the goal in the fifth minute, but Iowa goalkeeper Emily Moran was there to stop the shot.

Iowa’s Dana Dalrymple was the first to take aim at the net, placing a shot on the left side of the goal in the 38th minute. Wisconsin goalkeeper Michele Dalton made the stop.

Alyssa Cosnek challenged Dalton in the 59th minute, but the shot was wide of the goal. Jackie Kaeding also attempted the target in the 82nd minute, but Dalton got the save.

The Badgers attack was fierce in the extra periods. Leigh Williams fired at Moran at the 104:20 mark. Moran made the save, but the ball ricocheted off her hands and hit the crossbar. Laurie Nosbusch was there for the rebound and Wisconsin score in the 105th minute.

Moran made seven saves in goal.

Iowa travels to Columbus, OH, Friday to face Ohio State. Game time Friday is set for 6:30 (CT).
