WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team completed the first day of competition Saturday at the Purdue Fall Invitational. The tournament format includes two singles flights and one doubles flight in double elimination format.
The Black and Gold claimed four singles victories on the day. Sophomore Tom Mroziewicz defeated Billy Heuer of Purdue in the first round of Flight A, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. He then fell to Purdue’s Branko Kuzmanovic in the quarterfinals, 7-6 (3), 7-5.
Freshman Connor Gilmore recorded his first career victory as a Hawkeye. Gilmore defeated Ben Shafer of Butler, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round of Flight B. He then fell to Matt Manasse of Purdue, 6-3, 6-2.
Austen Kauss and Mroziewicz teamed up in doubles play and totaled two wins. The duo defeated Shafer and Dolins of Butler, 8-3, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, the pair defeated Rutherford/Firth of Eastern Illinois, 8-3. They will face Rose/Ramos of Purdue Sunday in the semifinals.
The Hawkeyes conclude competition Sunday in West Lafayette, IN.
