COLUMBUS, OH – – The University of Iowa field hockey team lost at Ohio State Sunday, 2-0. The Hawkeyes fall to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play.

“Our defense played very well,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Meghan Beamesderfer and Jess Barnett were effective and came up with big plays but our forwards struggled to make plays and keep possession.”

The visitors, playing their second conference road game, recorded three shots in the first half but were unable to come away with a score. The Buckeyes fired eight shots in the first half, but the Hawkeye defense and freshman goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw held the home team scoreless.

Both teams continued to battle in the second half. After trading possessions for most of the second half, Maria Briones scored off a deflection in the 65th minute to give the Scarlet and Gray the lead. Berta Queralt of Ohio State added another goal minutes later, making the final score 2-0 in favor of the Buckeyes.

Iowa returns home to Iowa City for a two-game home stand next weekend. The Hawkeyes will face No. 8 Michigan State Friday and Penn State Sunday. Both games will be held at Grant Field. Admission is free.
