IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa women’s golf team is in fourth place after shooting a team score of 306 during the first round of competition at the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course. The tournament was suspended due to darkness and the second round was not completed. The 13-team tournament is hosted by Iowa and is currently being led by Illinois, recording a 307 (+30) in the first round. The tournament also featured an ace by Illinois’ Crystal Smith on the 164 yard eighth hole.
Iowa’s top two golfers are in the top 10 on the individual leader board. Freshman Kristi Cardwell, currently tied for sixth place, broke her own personal record for 18 holes carding a par 72 (+8). Also leading the way for Iowa, was junior Laura Cilek. Currently, Cilek (78, +9) is tied for ninth. Junior Brianna Coopman (81, +12) and sophmore Chelsea Harris (77, +81) are both tied at 21st, respectively. Junior Lauren Forbes completed the competing roster for the Hawkeyes and shot 79 in the first round (+18).
Senior Alison Cavanaugh and freshman Gigi DiGrazia competed as individuals. Cavanaugh (84, +23) and DiGrazia (84, +23) are tied for 66th and 60th.
The 32nd annual Hawkeye Invitational will resume tomorrow morning at Finkbine Golf Course. Tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. The 13 teams will finish up the remainder of the second round as well as the last 18 holes of the third round.
