Hawkeyes to Conclude Fall Season in Challenge at Onion Creek

THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa women’s golf team will conclude its fall season in Austin, TX, competing at the 2009 Challenge at Onion Creek, Nov. 2-3. Iowa will tee off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Onion Creek Club. The 21 competing teams will play 36 holes Saturday and the final 18 Sunday. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com or hawkeyesports.com. Making up the Hawkeye squad this week are: Kristi Cardwell, Laura Cilek, Brianna Coopman, Lauren Forbes and Chelsea Harris.

THE COMPETITION — Iowa will face 20 teams, including: Augusta State, Baylor, Boise State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, San Francisco, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, UALR, UTSA, Washington State and Wisconsin.

NEXT COMPETITION — This competition concludes the Hawkeyes’ fall season. The next slated competition will be this spring at the Eagle Landing Invitational, which will take place March 7-9 in Orange Park, FL.

AT THE HAWKEYE INVITATIONAL– Iowa finished fifth at its annual Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course. The Hawkeyes shot a 932 as a team (306-313-313, +68).

Iowa was led by junior Laura Cilek and freshman Kristi Cardwell, both placing in the top 15 individually. Cilek fired a 77 in the second and 76 in the third to finish in 12th place with a 231 (+15). While Cardwell tied for 13th after shooting a 72 par in the first round — the team low of the year (233, +17).

Junior Brianna Coopman (236, +20) finished tied for 19th, recording an 80 the final round. Sophomore Chelsea Harris shot a 237 (+21) and junior Lauren Forbes carded a 78 in the final round to close with a 240 (+24). Freshman Gigi DiGrazia and senior Alison Cavanaugh competed as individuals. DiGrazia recorded a 251 (+35) while Cavanaugh ended up with a 263 (+47).
