Molnar Climbs Seven Spots in ITA Ranking

Jan. 7, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa sophomore Sonjar Molnar is ranked 65th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The announcement came Jan. 5 in the ITA’s first 2010 Division I poll. Molnar’s ranking is the program’s highest since Milica Veselinovic opened the 2006 season ranked 57th.

Molnar has moved up seven spots since the ITA preseason poll was released in September. The Guelph, Ontario native advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Midwest Regional tournament in October and finished the 2009 fall season with a 7-2 record.

Last year, Molnar was named Midwest Regional Women’s Rookie Player of the Year by the ITA. She is the first Hawkeye women’s tennis player in school history to earn the regional honor. Molnar put together an outstanding 18-4 singles record at the No. 1 position. She went 9-2 in conference singles to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and a spot on the all-Big Ten first team. She is the fourth women’s tennis player in school history to earn conference rookie of the year accolades and Iowa’s 12th first-team all-Big Ten honoree.

The Hawkeyes open the 2010 season Jan. 23 at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. Iowa will host sixth-ranked Notre Dame at 11 a.m.
