Iowa Finishes Day One At Shamrock Invite

SOUTH BEND, IN- The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team finished its first day of competition at the Shamrock Invite. The Hawkeyes faced host Norte Dame, Denver and Missouri. After the first day of competition the Hawkeyes lead Denver (78-29) and Notre Dame (66-43) in the dual and are tied with Missouri at 54.50.

The Hawkeyes started off the first day with a first-place finish in the 200 free relay. The team of sophomores Ryan Phelan, Duncan Partridge, junior Sean Hagan and freshman Jordan Huff recorded a time of 1:22.36. Iowa’s “B” team placed seventh with a time of 1:26.06.

Sophomore Paul Gordon continued the winning streak with a first-place finish in the 500 free. He earned a collegiate best time of 4:30.16. Huff placed fourth in the event with a collegiate best time of 4:36.21. Iowa had six other swimmers in the event.

Hagan earned a third-place finish in the 200 IM. He swam a season best time of 1:53.76. Junior Max Dittmer finished right behind Hagan with a time of 1:54.12 for fourth-place. Freshman Donny Warren also swam the event, placing sixth (1:54.99). Partridge placed first in the 50 free with a season best time of 20.54. Phelan also swam the 50 free, placing third (20.61).

The Hawkeyes ended the first day of competition with the 400 medley relay. The team of Dittmer, Hagan, Gordon and Partridge claimed second-place in the event with a time of 3:21.02. Iowa’s “B” team placed fourth (3:26.63).

Iowa had one diver competing at the invite. Senior Mike Gilligan competed in the 1-meter diving event. He placed fifth with a score of 312.50.

The competition continues tomorrow with the first session starting at 10 a.m. and the second session starting at 5 p.m.
