WACO, TX – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated No. 66 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday, 4-2. The 58th-ranked Hawkeyes, competing in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Tournament at Waco, TX, move to 1-1 on the season.
The Islanders, now 0-4 overall, claimed the doubles point. At the No. 2 position, Alex Pavlov and Robert Raguz defeated Reinoud Haal and Garret Dunn, 8-5. Marc Bruche and Nikita Zotov evened doubles play, defeating James Langford and Dmitry Novikov at the No. 1 spot, 9-7. Andrew Maingot and Nathan Robinson gave Texas A&M-Corpus Christi the doubles point, defeating Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos at the No. 3 position, 9-7.
McGeorge started the Hawkeyes off in singles play, winning 6-3, 6-1, over Nathan Robinson at the No. 5 position. Zotov fell at the No. 2 position to James Langford, 6-0, 6-2. Iowa responded, winning the next three singles matches to win the dual. Vasos defeated Robert Raguz 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 4 position and Haal defeated Alex Pavlov 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. Austen Kauss clinched the Iowa victory at the No. 6 position, claiming his first career dual singles win. The junior defeated Andrew Maingot 6-4, 6-4.
The Black and Gold return to action Friday against Memphis in their home opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
