University of Iowa freshman Matt McGrath has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after his strong performance against Illinois-Chicago Feb. 6 in Chicago. The Wheaton, IL, native helped No.7 Iowa to a 340.200-331.050 victory over No. 16 Illinois-Chicago.
The freshman recorded two first-place finishes, on still rings (14.650) and on vault (15.550), and was second in the floor exercise (14.600). McGrath also finished fifth on parallel bars (13.800) and was seventh on the high bar (12.900).
McGrath and the Hawkeyes return to action Feb. 20, when they travel to Oakland, CA, to compete in the Pacific Coast Classic. Competition is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
