IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated No. 58 Penn State Sunday, 4-3, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The 73rd-ranked Hawkeyes move to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the victory.
“It was a very good win for us against a very good team,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “Our guys fought for four and a half hours to get it done.”
The Hawkeyes, 4-1 at home, swept all three doubles matches to claim the point. Garret Dunn and Nikita Zotov got things started at the No. 3 position. They defeated Ryan Gormley and Bryan Welnetz, 8-5. The duo of Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos claimed a victory at the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point. The pair defeated Warren Hardie and Jason Lee, 8-6. McGeorge and Vasos are now 11-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Marc Bruche and Tom Mroziewicz also won at the No. 2 spot. They defeated Guillaume St-Maurice and Eddie Bourchier, 8-7.
Vasos won in singles competition to push the Hawkeye lead to 2-0. The sophomore downed Warren Hardie 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 4 position. In singles play, Vasos is 11-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Nittany Lions, 12-6 overall, claimed a victory at the No. 5 spot. Reinoud Haal then won at the No. 3 position to push the Iowa advantage to 3-1. The senior downed Jason Lee 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Penn State claimed victories at both the No. 6 and No. 2 positions to tie the match at three. Bruche battled Bourchier at the No. 1 spot and won, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, to clinch the victory for the Hawkeyes.
The Black and Gold return to action next Saturday at No. 41 Indiana. The match is scheduled to begin at noon (CT). Iowa will then travel to No. 15 Illinois Sunday. That match is also scheduled to begin at noon.
