Iowa City, IA – The University of Iowa track and field teams completed a weekend of competition at Western Illinois’ Lee Calhoun Memorial and the Sun Angel Invite in Tempe, AZ. Iowa took seven events between both meets and a bevy of Hawkeyes earned their way into the top-ten all-time list. The final team scores at the Lee Calhoun Memorial have the men’s team in fourth with 88 points and the women in fifth with 69.5 points. Eastern Illinois won the men’s and women’s competition, earning 213.5 and 206.5 points, respectively.
At the Sun Angel Classic, senior Rhonda-Kaye Trusty took two events for Iowa, winning the 100 (11.74) and 200-meter dash (23.83). Both times are collegiate bests and rank ninth and seventh all-time at Iowa, respectively. Freshman Matt Byers continued his success in the javelin, placing second with an impressive 232-2 (70.76m) toss that puts him second all-time at Iowa. Senior Zachary Schimp placed right behind Byers at fifth with a collegiate-best 211-0 (64.32m) which puts him at fourth in Iowa history. Senior Ray Varner placed second in the 400-meter hurdles at 50.24, a new collegiate best that boosts him to third in the Iowa record books. Senior Caleigh Bacchus is continuing a successful senior campaign in the high jump, placing third this weekend (5-10, 1.78m) and improving her position to third all-time at Iowa. Sophomore Erik Sowinski is looking for his success from the indoor season to carry over to the outdoor season after placing fifth this weekend in the 800 meters (1:48.56) and putting himself third in the Iowa record books. Freshman Jeff Thode is making his mark on the Iowa distance squad, placing third in the 1,500 meters (3:44.39) which places him third all-time at Iowa. Sophomore Patrick Richards was Iowa’s second event winner in Arizona, winning the 400-meter dash (46.74) with a collegiate-best mark that ties him for tenth all-time at Iowa.
The Lee Calhoun Memorial saw Iowa winning four events Saturday with junior Sam Bailin in the 5,000 meters (15:12.70), freshman Jordan Mullen in the 110-meter hurdles (14.17), freshman Brandon Oest in the high jump (6-9 3/4, 2.08m), and sophomore Matt Banse in the shot put (52-7 1/4, 16.03m). Banse also won Friday’s hammer throw competition (199-0, 60.66m). Sophomore Lindsay Anderson and freshman Majesty Tutson nearly won their events, but ended up placing second in the 1,500 meters (4:38.87) and discus (149-6, 45.57m), respectively. Freshman Katie Truedson placed third in the pole vault (11-5 1/4, 3.49m) putting her at third all-time at Iowa.
Iowa returns home next weekend to host the Iowa Invite on Saturday, April 17. This will mark the reopening of the Francis X. Cretzmeyer outdoor track facility after extensive flood damage in 2008. Events are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. The Hawkeyes are set to compete against student-athletes from Chicago State, Illinois, Marquette, Minnesota, Western Illinois, and Northern Iowa.
