IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa field hockey team will host a tournament Saturday featuring the current Hawkeye squad and an alumni team. Two Northwestern teams will also compete in the tournament. Play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Grant Field.
“We are looking forward to concluding our spring season with our home tournament this weekend,” said Associate Head Coach Lisa Cellucci. “The Hawks have been improving each week and I know the team is excited to show how much they have progressed since February. Northwestern and the Old Gold Alumni team will be formidable opponents so it will be a very competitive day.”
The alumni team, `Old Gold’, will feature 15 former Hawkeyes. Each team will play eight players at a time; seven in the field and a goalkeeper.
“We are extremely proud to have so many alumni coming back to town for the weekend,” added the former Hawkeye all-American. “It is great for the current team to get to know the Hawkeyes that came before them and continue to understand the tradition of excellence that Iowa Field Hockey stands for. The team is comprised of four current national team players (Barb Weinberg, Caroline Blaum, Lauren Pfeiffer, and Sarah Dawson), eight national All Americans, and every one of the alums attending this weekend have been a part of a Big Ten Championship, a Big Ten Tournament Championship, or a Final Four team during their time at Iowa. The Iowa vs. Old Gold game is going to be very competitive and I can’t wait to play!”
The format includes 25-minute games with a running clock. Teams will receive three points for a win, one point for a tie, and zero points for a loss. Each team will play each other once before playoff seeds are determined.
Iowa is scheduled to compete at 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Iowa alumni squad is scheduled to play at 11 a.m., noon, and 1:30 p.m. Playoff rounds will begin at 2 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, play will be moved indoors to the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
