WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Purdue Friday in West Lafayette, IN, 4-3. The 59th-ranked Hawkeyes move to 12-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play with the victory at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

“Today was another good win for us,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “It was another step toward making NCAA’s.”

The Hawkeyes, 7-6 away from Iowa City, were unable to claim the doubles point as the Boilermakers took two of three matches. At No. 2 doubles, Reinoud Haal and Austen Kauss teamed up to dominate Thomas Wilson and Paul Foley, 8-0. Iowa was unable to claim wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 position.

Marc Bruche got things started for the Hawkeyes in singles play. The sophomore defeated P.J. Rose at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-3. Kauss then downed Wilson at the No. 6 spot. The junior won 6-3, 6-3, to win his fourth straight match. Kauss is 12-5 in singles play and has won nine of his last ten overall. Tommy McGeorge defeated Foley at the No. 5 position to give the Hawkeyes a 3-1 advantage. The senior won 6-2, 6-4. Fellow senior Haal then won at the No. 4 position to clinch the victory for the Hawkeyes. Haal defeated Eric Ramos 6-3, 6-3.

The Black and Gold will conclude the regular season Sunday at home against No. 35 Minnesota. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
