Iowa Selected For 2011 ITA Kickoff Weekend

June 3, 2010

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team has earned a place in the 2011 ITA Kickoff Weekend, to be held Jan. 28-30, 2011. The announcement came from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 28 Hawkeyes will head to Atlanta, GA, to compete at Georgia Tech’s Bill Moore Tennis Center. Iowa will face Georgia Tech in the first match while Illinois and South Florida will compete in the second match. The winners of each match will face each other for the opportunity to compete in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 18-21 at the University of Virginia’s Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The teams were selected via draft setting where each of the 60 participating teams were allowed to pick the venue where they wished to compete when their team was selected.

This is the second time in the event’s three year history the Hawkeyes have been selected to compete. In 2009, Iowa traveled to Waco, TX, to compete in the first ITA Kickoff Weekend event, facing Virginia Tech and Princeton, but fell to both teams.

The Hawkeyes ended the 2010 season with a 17-7 record and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Iowa burst into the national spotlight March 2, ranked 54th nationally, and moved to 25th two weeks later. The Hawkeyes were regulars in the top-30 this season, reaching as high as 18th, a program best, in the March 28 rankings.
