Hawkeyes Announce 2010 Schedule

June 21, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa field hockey team has announced its 2010 schedule. The Hawkeyes will face another challenging slate, as 11 of the opponents were ranked or receiving votes at the end of the 2009 season.

“We are looking forward to the 2010 season,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “The schedule provides us with great top 25 non-conference teams to challenge us right off the bat. And as usual, the Big Ten will be ultra competitive this year.”

Iowa will begin the 2010 campaign by participating in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The tournament will be held on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Iowa will face Wake Forest (Aug. 28) and North Carolina (Aug. 29). Big Ten rival Michigan will also compete in the event. Last season, Iowa hosted the Challenge, falling to the Demon Deacons (3-2) and the Tar Heels (5-0). In 2008, The Hawkeyes defeated top-ranked North Carolina, ending their 25-match winning streak.

In Big Ten play, the Black and Gold will host Michigan (Oct. 10), Northwestern (Oct. 24) and Ohio State (Oct. 30) at Grant Field. The Hawkeyes travel to Michigan State (Sept. 24), Penn State (Oct. 2) and Indiana (Oct. 15).

The Big Ten Tournament will be held at Northwestern Nov. 4-7. Iowa will be seeking its fourth tournament championship in five years. Iowa won three straight tournaments from 2006-08. The Hawkeyes won at Northwestern last season, 1-0 in overtime.

The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be Nov. 13-14, with the NCAA Finals on Nov. 19-21 on the campus of the University of Maryland.
