IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta has announced that JD Reive has been named Head Men’s Gymnastics coach at the UI. The announcement came today from Barta. Reive replaces former Hawkeye Head Coach Tom Dunn, who retired at the end of the 2010 season.
Reive, who is the seventh head coach in the program’s 82-year history, comes to Iowa City after serving as an assistant coach at men’s gymnastics powerhouse Stanford for the past seven seasons. Reive helped the Cardinal to four top-three team finishes at the NCAA Championships, including the 2009 NCAA national championship.
During his time at Stanford, Reive coached 44 student-athletes to all-American honors. Reive was also honored as the Collegiate Gymnastics Association Assistant Coach of the Year three times (2006, 2009 and 2010) and was also the National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009.
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to represent the University of Iowa,” Reive said. “The athletic department’s continued support of men’s gymnastics is a testament to the great legacy of Hawkeye gymnastics; a legacy that I fully intend to build upon. There is a great deal of potential in this program that will soon be realized. It’s great to be a Hawkeye.”
Reive also has deep connections with the U.S. National Team. Most recently, he was named the squad’s head coach for the 2009 Toyota Cup in Japan and helped develop two members of the 2009-10 National Team.
