IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa Head Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery announced today that forward Brennan Cougill will not be on the 2010-11 roster after being ruled academically ineligible. The sophomore-to-be will transfer to Kirkwood Community College.
“It’s unfortunate that Brennan won’t be back with us next season,” said McCaffery. “In the short time I’ve known Brennan, he’s a tremendous person and would have been a good fit in our system. I’m confident the move to Kirkwood will be good for Brennan, where he can excel both academically and athletically under Coach Doug Wagemester.”
Cougill competed in 31 contests his freshman campaign, which included seven non-conference starts. The native of Sioux City averaged four points and three rebounds. He ranked sixth on the team in 3-pointers made (18). Cougill registered his first collegiate double-double at Iowa State on Dec. 11, posting personal bests in scoring (12) and rebounding (10).
“I take full responsibility for my academic effort,” said Cougill. “My goal is to improve both academically and athletically to give myself a chance to return to the Hawkeyes. It’s comforting knowing that I am surrounded by incredible support and I’m positive this will make me a better person and student.”
“We are confident he will overcome this adversity,” added McCaffery. “We would like to have Brennan back with us provided he takes care of business. That said, we can’t guarantee his return to the Hawkeye roster in the future, but plan on re-recruiting Brennan.”
