IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa seniors Adrian Clayborn and Ricky Stanzi both picked up more preseason recognition today. Clayborn is one of 30 student-athletes on the 2010 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award “Watch List” while Stanzi is one of 15 finalists for the 2010 Premier Player of College Football Award.
Clayborn, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound defensive end from St. Louis, has already been named to the preseason watch lists for both the Rotary LombardiAward and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. He was also named a preseason first team All-American by Sporting News, Playboy Magazine, College Football Insiders, Lindy’s Football Preview and The Kickoff. Clayborn was selected a preseason second team All-American by NationalChamps.net and a preseason first team All-Big Ten pick by Blue Ribbon Yearbook.
Last season, Clayborn earned the Most Valuable Player Award at the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl in Iowa’s 24-14 win over Georgia Tech. He recorded 36 solo tackles and 34 assists in 13 games, with 20 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks and four forced fumbles.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year Award is given annually by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, and is the fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.
Stanzi, a 6-4, 230-pound quarterback from Mentor, Ohio, is on the watch list for both the Davey O’Brien and Manning awards. He completed 171 of 304 passes for 2,417 yards and 17 touchdowns last season.
