KENT, Ohio – – The University of Iowa field hockey team lost in overtime to No. 19 Stanford Saturday at Murphy-Mellis Field in Kent, OH, 2-1. It marks the second straight year Stanford and Iowa have battled to overtime.
“We did a really good job in the first half,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We dominated field position but did not take advantage of scoring opportunities. Jessica Barnett had another outstanding performance. We are looking to play a solid game tomorrow.”
Neither team established much offensively in the opening half, leading to no score at halftime. The Cardinal (4-1) got on the board first at the 49:03 mark as Xanthe Travlos notched her second goal of the season.
With just under two minutes remaining in regulation, the Hawkeyes were awarded a penalty corner. At the 68:26 mark, sophomore Jessica Barnett scored to send the game to overtime. Freshman Danielle Peirson assisted the goal.
At the 76:47 mark, Stanford clinched the victory. Stephanie Bryre scored her second goal of the season to give the Cardinal the 2-1 victory.
Iowa (1-4) returns to action Sunday. The Hawkeyes play at Kent State at 11 a.m. central time. The game will be held at Murphy-Mellis Field in Kent, OH.
