Lincoln, NE – – The University of Iowa women’s golf team finished seventh at the Chip-N Club Invitational Tuesday. The tournament was scheduled for 54 holes, but due to Monday weather delays the tournament was shortened to 36 holes. Arkansas State won the tournament by one-stroke over Kansas and Kansas State.
Senior Laura Cilek led the Hawkeyes for the second straight day and completed the tournament by shooting a 74 (+2). Her 148 (+4) led to a fourth place finish. Coach Kelly Crawford raved about Cilek’s great performance. “I’m so proud of Laura and her fourth place finish. She played so well and stayed focused the whole time. What a great start to her senior year!” said Crawford.
Junior Chelsea Harris also played well for Iowa, finishing the 36-hole tournament tied for 23rd (+10, 154). Senior Lauren Forbes finished tied for 43rd after posting a 157 (+13). Senior Brianna Coopman ended the tournament tied for 58th place after firing an 82 in the final round (160, +16). Sophomore Kristi Cardwell registered a 162 (+18), finishing tied for 71st place.
Coach Crawford saw a lot of good things from her team at its first tournament of the season, but also sees room for improvement. “Off the tee I felt we hit the ball pretty well. Where we struggled was inside 100 yards,” noted Crawford. “We just couldn’t convert the “easy” up and downs and that really cost us some shots. For our home tournament we are going to have to do a better job with the short game.”
The Hawkeyes return home on September 17-18 to host the Hawkeye Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will begin at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City with a shotgun start at 8:30 (CT) Saturday. Teams will play 36 holes Saturday and the final 18 holes Sunday. Admission is free.
