EAST LANSING, Mich. – – The University of Iowa field hockey team lost at No. 7 Michigan State Friday in its Big Ten conference opener, 1-0. The match was held at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, MI.
Both defenses held strong in the early moments of the first half. Michigan State broke through in the 30th minute of play. Jantine Steinmetz scored from the top left side of the circle to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage going into halftime. Joelle van Ierland was credited with an assist.
Defense was the theme again in the second half as neither team was able to push across a goal, giving Michigan State a 1-0 victory. The Hawkeye defense was led by sophomore goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw who notched five saves.
Iowa (2-6, 0-1) returns to action Sunday. The Black and Gold will travel to Mount Pleasant, MI to face Central Michigan. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. central time.
