MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – – The University of Iowa field hockey team won at Central Michigan Sunday, 1-0. The match was held at the CMU Field Hockey Complex in Mount Pleasant, MI.
Defense was the theme in the first half as neither team was able to push across a goal. The Hawkeye offense applied pressure throughout the second half and broke through late in the period. Iowa was awarded a penalty corner in the 64th minute. It capitalized as freshman Marike Stribos found sophomore Jessica Barnett, who scored to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 advantage.
The Iowa defense held the Chippewas scoreless the rest of the way to seal the 1-0 victory. The Hawkeye defense was led by sophomore goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw, who notched her third shutout of the year.
Iowa (3-6) stays on the road next weekend. The Black and Gold will travel to University Park, PA to battle Big Ten rival Penn State Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. The Hawkeyes play at Lock Haven Sunday at 11 a.m. Both times are central.
