IOWA CITY, Iowa – – University of Iowa Head Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery and his wife, Margaret, will serve as honorary co-chairs for the American Cancer Society’s 2011 Relay For Life of Johnson County.
Coach McCaffery, who was named Iowa’s 22nd head men’s basketball coach in March, and his wife, a former basketball standout at Notre Dame, will be actively involved in promoting the 2011 Relay. The ACS’s signature fund-raising event will be held Friday, June 24, at The University of Iowa’s Cretzmeyer Track in Iowa City.
“The American Cancer Society and Relay For Life is a cause that’s close to Margaret and I because cancer has affected both of our families,” said McCaffery, who also is actively involved in Coaches vs. Cancer, a nationwide collaboration between the ACS and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. “It’s for this reason that we have teamed with the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and make June’s fund-raising event a successful one. We’re excited to be involved in this event and we urge the Johnson County area to help us fight this disease.”
Relay For Life of Johnson County Co-Chair Jackie Kleppe Williams is thrilled with the McCafferys generosity and hopes their involvement also will encourage community members to participate in the event and the fight against cancer.
“It’s extremely exciting to know that the Relay For Life of Johnson County – an event that’s near and dear to so many people’s hearts – also is important to the McCafferys,” said Williams, who is in her third year as Relay co-chair. “It’s my hope that their involvement – and the enthusiasm and leadership they bring – will help us continue to grow this event and the money we raise to help put an end to this deadly disease.”
