CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team faced the 17th ranked Fighting Illini of Illinois Saturday night. The Hawkeyes lost in heartbreaking fashion, falling 2-1 in overtime.
After a scoreless first half, the Black and Gold recorded the first score of the game at the 69:36 mark of the second half when sophomore Gabrielle Ainsworth capitalized on a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead. Ainsworth led the Hawkeyes with four shots on goal. The second goal of the game also came via a penalty kick as Krystin Miller of Illinois took advantage of an Iowa penalty to tie the game 1-1. The game-winning goal came from the foot of the Illinois’s Shayla Mutz in the first overtime at the 93:59 mark.
“We played really hard but it’s always tough to lose a one goal game,” said Head Coach Ron Rainey. “Illinois is good and we came very close to upsetting a top 20 team at home. We need to redouble our efforts to get ready for the next game. I’m proud to be part of this group and I look forward to playing Northwestern on Thursday.”
Iowa (7-6-2) will return to action on Oct. 21 when they travel to Evanston, Ill., to play Northwestern. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. (CT).
