Postgame Quotes
Wisconsin Head Coach Bret Bielema
On the blocked PAT
It ends up being the game. It’s a good example of how our guys play every snap. J.J. (Watt) burst through there. It’s another thing that we really stress. I’ve always told my defense that to me the truest test of what a defense is all about is how they play PAT because anytime you’re on the field and it’s a PAT situation it means that you were just scored upon and how are you going to react? The reaction was unbelievable and ends up being the difference in the game.
On fake punt
That was something that we had seen on film. With the scheme that we run from a punt standpoint, certain teams are going to defend it differently and we had seen that they had gone with two edge pressure’s and were covering down. We made that call once I saw them send out the punt return unit. Great execution, great faith.
On defense’s last two stands:
The one after the pick you have the whole stadium going against us. Charlie got them in the huddle and really talked about how this was the time that we needed to hold them to a field goal or nothing to keep it a seven point game. They went out there and did that and it was a great response. At the end of the game, once they got the first down and the called a timeout and there was 12 seconds left, we played cover two to try to keep everything in front of us.
On being an Iowa fan next week when the play Michigan State
I’m always an Iowa fan. I graduated from here; much has been said about my tattoo. I like Kirk and his staff. I want him to have success. Now, in the politics of a Big Ten campaign you’re going to be cheering or hoping but I don’t really get wrapped up in that. I really do think that in our conference our coaches generally pull for each other and let the cards fall as they come.
QB Ricky Stanzi
What are your thoughts on today’s game?
“We didn’t play well enough to win. That’s the first thing that comes to mind. We left a lot of plays out there and didn’t have what it takes to play a great game. Our hats go off to them. They outplayed us in every way throughout the entire ball game.”
The defense is putting this game on themselves, what do you say to that?
“It’s a team game. There were plenty of times that the offense sputtered out and didn’t do our jobs. We all just need to focus on improvement. It’s the same as any other week and we’ll get back to work tomorrow.”
Do you still feel there’s a lot to play for this season?
“We’re going back to work tomorrow and Tuesday with the same attitude as we had last week. We’re going to do the same thing we did last week. We’re going to get back, we’re going to watch a lot of film and nothing is going to change. We’re going to remain the same team and keep trying to prepare as well as possible. We’ll take it out to the field and try and play our best possible football on Saturday.”
What are your thoughts on today’s game?
“We played hard for all four quarters. I just think Wisconsin came to play and we made too many mistakes to get the win late in the game.”
Where do guys go from here?
“We’re still set out to win as many games as we can. There’s a lot of season left. We’re going to hit the film tomorrow and see what we can get corrected as we look for Michigan State next week.”
What gave Wisconsin the advantage?
“They played hard the entire game. They took advantage of what we gave them. We made too many mistakes to be successful at the end of the game. We’re going to have to work hard to get those mistakes corrected.”
The defense is putting this game on themselves, what do you say to that?
“It’s a team effort. We win as a team and lose as a team. We’re going to take this loss as a team.”
What do you expect from the senior leaders in practice this week?
“The seniors are definitely the leaders of our team. Tomorrow, and going into this practice week, they’ll definitely be on us and rallying this team together and get us back on track.”
On the play of the defense
“We had our opportunities where we needed to stop them and we just didn’t. We are going to have to go back and watch the film and then move forward.”
On the momentum after Wisconsin’s fake punt
“It was a good call by them. They converted the fourth down and we had to go back out there. We needed to stop them and we weren’t able to.”
On stopping the Wisconsin offense
“They did a good job of executing. It is a team loss, but as a defense we needed to go in there and stop them, and at times we were unable to.”
