IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior guard Kachine Alexander is one of 50 NCAA Division I women’s basketball players to appear on the Naismith Trophy Watch List. The award, which is presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, is presented annually to college basketball’s player of the year. The Atlanta Tipoff Club released the Naismith Trophy Watch List today.
Alexander is now on the watch lists for the three most prestigious awards in NCAA women’s basketball. She was named to the Wade Trophy and Wooden Award watch lists earlier this fall.
Alexander was named to both the State Farm Coaches and Associated Press honorable mention All-America teams last season. She was also a first team all-Big Ten and all-Defensive team selection. The Minneapolis, MN, native ranked second in the Big Ten and 23rd nationally with 10.4 rebounds per game, and was only one of two guards in all of Division I women’s basketball to average a double-double (16 points and 10.4 rebounds).
Alexander scored double figures in 22 of 27 games played, including eight 20-plus point performances. She had 10 or more rebounds in 17 of 25 games played, including 10 games with 12 or more boards.
Alexander started the 2010-11 season with a double-double against Concordia-St. Paul in an exhibition contest, scoring 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Alexander was one of four Big Ten student-athletes on the list. She is joined by Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender and Samantha Prahalis and Northwestern’s Amy Jaeschke.
In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors will compile a midseason team of the top 30 players in the nation. Then in March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will vote to narrow the list to the four finalists. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded on April 4, 2011 at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis.
