IOWA CITY, Iowa– The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team concluded the second day of the Hawkeye Invitational. The Hawkeyes are still in second place with 618 points. Denver continues to lead to competition with 702.5 points.
“I can’t hang a lot on to the meet and pool records but it is fun all the same to see those names up there,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “What we wanted tonight was to have people moving up in their positions and every heat we had an Iowa Hawkeye in, we wanted to win that heat. We did a really nice job with that, especially in the finals. We have to prepare now for a whole new set of events tomorrow morning.”
The Hawkeyes kicked off the second day of the competition with the 200 medley relay. Junior Danielle Carty, freshman Karolina Wartalowicz, and seniors Katarina Tour and Caitlin Polz teamed up for a second-place finish in the event. The team posted a time of 1:43.80.
Freshman Haley Gordon carried her success from the first day of competition over into her swims tonight. In the prelims session she set a new pool and meet record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:23.74. She took first-place at the finals session and improved her time to 4:22.04, resetting a new pool and meet record.
Tour had the second first-place finish of the night for the Hawkeyes. She posted the top time of 55.40 in the 100 fly. Tour also took the top spot in the 100 breast, posting a new pool and meet record of 1:02.53. Her time was also an NCAA “B” qualifying time. Gordon rounded out the top eight in the 100 fly with a time of 57.65.
Iowa concluded the second day of the competition with the 800 free relay. Senior Verity Hicks, junior Daniela Cubelic, and freshmen Emily Hovren and Emily Christiansen placed third in the event with a time of 7:35.05. Iowa’s “B” relay took seventh in the event with a time of 7:41.55.
The Hawkeye divers competed in the 3-meter diving event today. Senior Deidre Freeman took the top spot in event with a score of 352.50. Freeman also collected a collegiate best score in the event. Junior Veronica Rydze placed fifth in the event with a score of 285.35.
