IOWA CITY, Iowa – – The University of Iowa field hockey team has announced its team award winners for the 2010 season. These awards include the Most Valuable Player, Practice Player of the Year, Nancy McLinden Carr Award and Dr. Christine Grant Leadership Award. The awards are voted on by athletes and coaches.
Sophomore Jessica Barnett was named the Most Valuable Player. This award is presented to the player who demonstrates outstanding skill, character, competitive drive, leadership, and devotion to team goals. These traits are embodied by the individual that the team and coaches deem most valuable to team success.
Barnett, a native of North Vancouver, Canada, has started every game of her Hawkeye career. In 2010, she was named to the West All-Region team, the Big Ten All-Tournament team and was a second team All-Big Ten selection. Barnett started all 19 games last year as a freshman and was a main contributor on Iowa’s defensive penalty corner unit. This year, she led the Black and Gold in goals (seven), points (14) and game-winning goals (two).

Sophomore Kathleen McGraw received the Dr. Christine Grant Leadership Award. The award is presented to the player who demonstrates leadership on a daily basis. This award winner has the utmost respect of her teammates, coaches and opponents. In addition, she represents the University of Iowa in a first class manner in the classroom and on the field.
McGraw, a native of Atherton, Calif., started all 17 games in goal for the Hawkeyes in 2010. She recorded 73 saves and notched three shutouts as a sophomore and earned academic All-Big Ten honors. McGraw has started 33 of 34 career games played and has recorded five career shutouts.
Sophomore Sarah Drake earned the Practice Player of the Year award. The award is given to the player who maintains the highest level of intensity in practice throughout the year, helping to make her teammates better by always competing and giving everything she has in all training sessions.
Drake, who hails from Ann Arbor, Mich., has started every game of her career. She was named second team all-Big Ten in 2010, tallying two goals and one assists. She was named to NFHCA National Academic Squad last year as a freshman and was named academic All-Big Ten in 2010. Drake amassed eight goals in 2009, which ranked third on the team, and recorded 17 points, which tied for third most on the team.
The Nancy McLinden Carr Award went to junior Becca Spengler for the second consecutive year. The Nancy McLinden Carr Award is presented to the player who consistently exudes enthusiasm, energy and a positive attitude within the Iowa field hockey program. These attributes were possessed by Nancy in the game of field hockey and life.
The Lititz, Pa., native was Iowa’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree for the second consecutive year in 2010. She has started 36 of 47 career games played. The two-time academic All-Big Ten honoree tallied two goals in 2010.
