Hawkeye Freshmen Honored

Dec. 14, 2010

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two University of Iowa freshmen were honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Alex Melin and Ashley Catrell were both named to the 2010 NSCAA Girls High School All-America Team.

The award recognizes high school athletes that competed during the 2009-10 school year. Melin, a native of Verona, Wisc., and Catrell, originally from Overland Park, Kan., were both selected as forwards on the team. The 77 girls from high schools around the country will be honored at an All-America Luncheon on Jan. 15.

Melin started every game this season for the Hawkeyes. She recorded three goals and one assist on 40 shots. Catrell contributed valuable minutes to the Iowa offense, coming off the bench and hitting the net three times for six points.

“This is really neat award for Alex and Ashley,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “It was a great way to end their senior years and that effort has carried through to success as Hawkeyes. We are looking forward to seeing both of them make great strides this spring.”
