Jan. 5, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa’s women’s tennis team appears in three polls released today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 30 in the ITA’s Division I team rankings, their highest season-opening ranking since the team debuted at No. 36 in 2007. Junior Sonja Molnar is ranked No. 70 in the Division I singles poll and No. 55 in the doubles poll with senior Lynne Poggensee-Wei.

Molnar opens the season ranked among the top 75 for the second consecutive year. She earned All-Big Ten honors last season after compiling a 28-9 overall record while competing at the No. 1 position. She and former Hawkeye Merel Beelen earned a bid to the NCAA doubles tournament to become the first Hawkeye doubles team to advance to the national championships since 2000.

Iowa returns five players from a lineup that finished 2010 ranked No. 28 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons. The Hawkeyes finished 2010 with a 17-7 record and earned the No. 4 seed at the Big Ten Championships.

The Hawkeyes open the 2011 season Jan. 15-17 at the FSU Seminole Invitational. They’ll host Miami (OH) in their home opener Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
