Tampa, Fla.–The University of Iowa men’s swimming team competed at the Tampa Relays Saturday afternoon at the UT Swimming Complex in Tampa, Fla. The Hawkeyes, racing with two squads in each of the 10 relay events, captured first place in all 10 events and swept first and second-place honors in four events.
Iowa racked up 224 points to finish first out of four teams. Host University of Tampa finished in second (96), The University of the Incarnate Word took third (76) and South Dakota State finished in fourth (44).
“We’re happy to come away with solid wins in a unique and competitive relay format meet,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “Thanks to the University of Tampa for running a great meet. Our trip continues with more intense training throughout the week.”
The Iowa quartet of senior Richard Salhus, freshman Max Behles, sophomore Donny Warren and junior Duncan Partridge kicked off the relays with a first-place finish in the 800 free relay (7:05.33). The Hawkeyes finished three second ahead of Iowa’s second-place relay team of freshmen Manuel Belzer and Gianni Sesto, and sophomores Patrick Weigand and Jordan Huff (7:08.66).
Iowa also swept first and second-place honors later on in the meet in the 400 medley relay. The first-place winning team of freshman Dustin Rhoads, senior Sean Hagen, sophomore Byron Butler and freshman Gianni Sesto recorded a time of 3:30.26. The Hawkeye relay team of senior Max Dittmer, freshman Andrew Marciniak, senior Brian Tremml and sophomore Mitch Taylor touched out at 3:32.85 to finish second.
The Hawkeyes will return home Jan. 22 when they host Northwestern. The event will start at 11 a.m. (CT)
