IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team hosted the first annual Meet the Hawks night Friday evening on the second level of the Paul W. Brechler Press Box inside Kinnick Stadium. Family and fans of the program got together to prepare for the 2011 season and support the No. 16 Hawkeyes.

“This is a great time for Iowa women’s gymnastics,” said Head Coach Larissa Libby. “We felt like this was a good time to give the fans, friends and family an opportunity to see the girls on a different level, outside of the training venues and competitive arena.”

Those in attendance were able to ask the team and coaching staff questions and receive autographs. The GymHawks unveiled their 2011 Iowa women’s gymnastics team poster, threw out t-shirts and raffled off prizes, including a “Season Ticket” package. Additionally, one lucky fan was drawn to be the Kid Captain for Saturday’s meet.

“Tonight was very important for us as we were able to build on our fan base,” added Libby. “We’re hoping that an invested interest will keep them coming back to support the Hawkeyes. Personal relationships with the team are very important to us and it all starts with events like we had tonight.”

Meet the Hawks night kicked off an exciting weekend of Iowa gymnastics, as the men’s and women’s teams will host a co-ed meet which opens both teams’ home seasons. Libby and Company will host the Michigan Wolverines as Head Coach JD Reive will lead the men’s team against the University of Illinois-Chicago. Action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. (CT) inside the UI Field House.
