Iowa Tripped Up By DePaul In Windy City

Feb. 5, 2011

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was knocked off for the first time this season in a road match with DePaul. The 63rd-ranked Hawkeyes (1-1 overall) were upended 5-2 by the Blue Demons (5-1) in a contest where a majority of the matches came down to the wire.

Sophomore Garret Dunn remained perfect on the year in both singles and doubles, improving to 2-0 in both categories. In No. 5 singles play, Dunn earned each set through a tie-breaker to take the match against Filip Dzanko 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Dunn teamed up with senior Nikita Zotov to give the Hawkeyes their only doubles victory. Dunn and Zotov ousted Ben Hartman and Dzanko 8-6.

Junior Will Vasos also stayed perfect in singles action with a convincing victory of DePaul’s Matija Palinic 6-3, 6-2.

“Garret was a double-winner for us, and played solid tennis. Will also played another good singles match for us,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “We expected DePaul to be tough, especially on their home court, and they were.”

Iowa’s top-singles player in Marc Bruche was defeated by Sven Kasper despite winning the first set 6-3. Kasper rallied to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-2. Zotov had a similar match, winning the first set 6-3 before falling 6-2, 7-6 (1) to George Chanturia. Sophomore Mitch Beckert lost to Ben Hartman in a very close match as well, falling 7-6 (2) and 7-6 (2).

Iowa will hit the court next on Feb. 11th against No. 69 Arkansas. The Hawkeyes will stay in Fayetteville through the 12th as well, where they will face No. 55Santa Clara.
