GymHawks Take Three Individual Titles At NC State

Raleigh, NC – The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team fell to No. 18 North Carolina State, 194.375-194.850, in a tough loss on the road Sunday afternoon. Despite setting season team marks on vault and bars, the 23rd-ranked Hawkeyes fell behind late and were dealt their second straight loss. Iowa will move to a season mark of 3-4. Competition was held inside NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum.

The GymHawks swept the all-around competition with competitors in the first, second and third positions. Senior Rebecca Simbhudas won the all-around with a score of 39.275. Sophomore Jessa Hansen took second with a score of 39.250 while senior Houry Gebeshian posted a 38.575 to finish third.

Iowa began the meet on bars where they set a season mark of 49.100, well ahead of NC State’s 48.425. Hansen won the event with a career high of 9.875. Simbhudas recorded a 9.850 to tie for second while Gebeshian placed fourth with a 9.825. Freshman Tesla Cox set a career mark of 9.775 to finish tied for fifth with sophomore Emma Stevenson.

The Hawkeyes moved to vault where they set another season high of 48.975, just behind NC State’s 49.000. Gebeshian took home a share of the title after earning a career high of 9.850. Junior Annie Szatkowski tied for fourth with a 9.825 while Simbhudas placed sixth with a 9.800.

The GymHawks then moved to floor where they lost to NC State, 48.550-48.850. Hansen tied for second with a score of 9.825 while Gebeshian and Simbhudas tied for fifth. The pair each posted a 9.725.

Iowa finished the afternoon on beam where they fell to the Wolfpack, 47.750-48.575. Simbhudas clinched the all-around title with a win on beam. The Markham, Ontario, native posted an impressive 9.900. Hansen and Cox finished in fourth and fifth, respectively. Hansen recorded a 9.800 while Cox earned a 9.700.

The GymHawks will return home to host the University of Denver Feb. 11. Competition will be held in the UI Field House and is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (CT).
