AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Iowa women’s rowing team kicked off the 2011 spring season at the Longhorn Invitational. The Hawkeyes raced the University of Oklahoma Friday night and took on the Texas Longhorns and San Diego Saturday on Lady Bird Lake.

On Friday, the first day of competition, Iowa posted its first win against Oklahoma in the 2V8. Iowa’s boat went a time of 7:29.9, while Oklahoma’s finished at 7:47.1.

The Hawkeyes continued the competition on Saturday, facing Texas in the morning and San Diego in the afternoon.

Despite Texas being unbeaten at the Longhorn Invitational, the Hawkeyes raced strong against its crews. Iowa’s 2V8 boat came in second in the event with a time of 7:21.2. The last boat to race was the 1V8 and it posted a second place finish of 7:06.9-to-7:14.7.

Iowa notched three victories against San Diego. Its first victory came in the 1N8 boat with a finishing time of 8:17.7 ahead of San Diego’s boat finishing at 8:29.5. The Hawkeyes went on to win the 2V8 7:50.5-to-8:00.4 and 1V8 7:33.2-to-7:40.5.

The Hawkeyes will conclude competition at the Longhorn Invitational Sunday morning when they face Kansas State.
