EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team made a rally in East Lansing, but fell to the No. 57 Spartans after a heartbreaking final singles point went in favor of the opponent. The No. 60 Hawkeyes (8-9 overall, 2-5 in Big Ten) lost 4-3 to Michigan State (16-7, 2-6) in a contest that came down to the final match.
The Spartans held a 2-0 team lead when junior Will Vasos tallied the Black and Gold’s first point. Vasos, playing in the No. 2 singles position, cruised past Austin Brooks 6-3, 6-2. Vasos improved his dual singles win count to a dozen.
The Hawkeyes responded after another Spartan point this time, as junior Marc Bruche notched a win in No. 1 singles. Bruche defeated Denis Bogatov in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 to again move Iowa to just one point away from the tie. Bruche became the second Hawkeye to reach ten dual singles wins this season.
Senior Austen Kauss secured that tie for the Hawkeyes, evening the match at 3-3 with a three-set victory in No. 3 singles. Kauss defeated Ronnie Hulewicz 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Kauss has eight singles wins on the season.
With the match tied 3-3, Iowa’s Garret Dunn tried his best to rally after losing the first set, but couldn’t quite pull it off. Dunn loss to John Stratton in No. 5 singles after dropping two sets in tie-breakers. Dunn fell 7-6 (7), 3-6, 7-6 (2).
Bruche and Vasos continued to be a force in No. 1 doubles for the Hawkeyes. The duo handily defeated Stratton and Andrew Lied 8-3 to give Iowa the early advantage. Bruche and Vasos have a team high 11 dual doubles wins. The Spartans won the final two doubles matches to claim the team point, which would prove to be pivotal after the match.
The Hawkeyes won’t have long to wait to try and get back into the win column, playing this Sunday at No. 27 Michigan (11-8, 4-3). Start time is noon. It will be Iowa’s final road match before closing out the regular season with two home matches.
