Hawkeyes Claim Doubles Point Against No. 27 Michigan

April 17, 2011

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team claimed the doubles point against No. 27 Michigan, but couldn’t hold on to earn the team victory. The Hawkeyes (8-10 overall, 2-6 in Big Ten) fell to the Wolverines (12-9, 5-4) 5-2 inside the Varsity Tennis Center.

“We played a good match with two doubles wins and a nice win from Austen (Kauss) in singles,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “For the weekend, Austen won both his matches while Marc and Will swept doubles and split singles, so there were some good performances.”

Playing on the road in the second time in as many days, the Hawkeyes opened up a 1-0 lead after doubles action.

Although Michigan claimed the first doubles match, junior Tom Mroziewicz and sophomore Garret Dunn earned a victory in the No. 3 match to even things up. The duo defeated Chris Cha and Chris Madden 8-5.

Juniors Marc Bruche and Will Vasos provided the difference-making advantage with a win in No. 1 doubles to give Iowa a 1-0 lead. Bruche and Vasos defeated Shaun Bernstein and Jason Jung 8-6 to improve their doubles record to 12-4.

The Wolverines won the first four singles matches to claim the team victory. Senior Austen Kauss provided the lone singles win for the Hawkeyes to give Iowa another point. Kauss, an Overland Park, Kan. Native, defeated Bernstein in the closest match of the night.

Kauss dropped the first set 3-6, but rallied to win the second set 6-3. Since Michigan already secured the team win, the match went into a tie-breaker instead of a third set. Kauss claimed the tie-breaker 10-7 to win his second singles match in a row in the No. 3 position. Kauss has nine dual singles wins on the season.

The Hawkeyes will close out the regular season at home next weekend with two matches. Iowa hosts Wisconsin (8-10, 3-3) on April 22nd with a 3 p.m. start time. The Hawkeyes also host No. 20 Minnesota (14-3, 5-1) on the 24th with a noon start time.
