Hawkeyes Rank Fifth in Average Attendance Increase

IOWA CITY, Iowa – – The University of Iowa men’s basketball program increased their average attendance from the previous year by an average of 2,085 fans in head coach Fran McCaffery’s first season. The boost in attendance ranks fifth among Division I programs in the country.

The Hawkeyes trailed only BYU (4,685), San Diego State (4,441), Louisville (2,435) and St. John’s (2,324), all of whom were NCAA Tournament qualifiers.

“We truly appreciate the tremendous support Hawkeye fans showed throughout the season,” said McCaffery. “The ranking is a testament to their passion and loyalty for the program.”

Overall, Iowa averaged 11,635 fans in 16 home games during McCaffery’s inaugural season, ranking the Hawkeye program 31st in the country. Iowa vaulted 17 spots in the ranking from the previous year.

“Carver-Hawkeye Arena provides a remarkable game atmosphere, which is a credit to our exceptional fan support,” added McCaffery. “We look forward to building off last year and seeing even more fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena next season.”

Overall, the Big Ten Conference led the nation for the 35th straight season, averaging 12,826 at 193 home games during the season. Seven Big Ten programs ranked in the top 25.
