July 8, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Two members of the University of Iowa football team have been named to national award watch lists. Junior offensive lineman Riley Reiff was named to the Outland Trophy watch list and senior defensive back Shaun Prater was named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list.

The Outland Trophy, the third-oldest award in major college football, has been presented annually since 1946. It is awarded to the best interior lineman in college football. Three Hawkeyes, Cal Jones (1955), Alex Karras (1957) and Robert Gallery (2003), have won the award.

Reiff (6-6, 300) has been named a preseason All-American by four media outlets. He was one of five lineman nationwide selected to the Playboy magazine All-American team. The Parkston, S.D., native was also named a second-team preseason All-American by Consensus Draft Services (CDS) and third-team All-American by Phil Steele and Athlon Sports. Reiff was a first-team All-Big Ten preseason pick by Lindy’s and Athlon Sports. He started all 13 games for the Hawkeyes in 2010 and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list features the nation’s top defensive players. It is awarded each season to the nation’s best defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

Prater, an Omaha, Neb., native, was honored by Lindy’s and Athlon Sports as a second team All-American and an honorable mention preseason All-American by Consensus Draft Services (CDS). The cornerback was also named preseason first team All-Big Ten by Lindy’s, Athlon Sports and Phil Steele. He was named to the Bednarik Award (nation’s top defensive player) watch list Tuesday. Prater (5-11, 180) intercepted four passes in 2010 and was a first-team All-Big Ten selection by league coaches and media.

Iowa opens its 2011 season against Tennessee Tech on Sept. 3 at Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff is 11 a.m., CT (BTN HD).
