Hawkeyes Blank Drake in Exhibition

Aug. 13, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s soccer team hosted Drake University Saturday in an exhibition match. The Hawkeyes controlled the game, taking the win with a 6-0 decision.

Junior Jade Grimm collected a quick pair of goals to start the game. The first found the net at the 9:55 mark when she scored off a pass from freshman Cloé Lacasse. Grimm’s second goal of the day came on a long shot that hit the cross bar and came straight down to land on the line.

Shortly after the half time break, sophomore Alex Melin converted a corner kick sent in by senior Morgan Showalter. Melin’s header from the middle of the pack sailed over Drake goalkeeper Kalena Litch’s hands.

Showalter got the ball in the midfield during the 62nd minute and advanced it up field on her own before reaching the six-yard box. Showalter’s shot from straight on soared by the opposing keeper, giving Iowa its fourth score of the game.

The Black and Gold continued the dominating possessions throughout much of the second half. Late in the game, freshman Nicole Urban got the ball on the right side of the six-yard box. The Lisle, Ill. native, found the net on a hard angled shot. Urban wasn’t the only successful newcomer on the field. Classmate Anne Marie Thomas was in the midst of a scuffle in the box during the 82nd minute. Thomas got the ball and fired it into the net from eight yards out, finalizing the score at 6-0.

“We had a good start and were able to play everyone,” said Head Coach Ron Rainey. “After every exhibition game, there are always tons of things to work on. It was nice to see us possess the ball so well in the second half.”

The Hawkeyes open the regular season Aug. 19 in Chicago, Ill. Iowa will take on DePaul at 4:00 p.m. then return home to host Western Illinois, Sunday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m.
