IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s soccer team continued its success Sunday, improving to 7-0 with a 5-0 shutout over South Dakota. The Iowa offense was relentless for the entirety of the game, keeping possession in the front third for much of the game.
In the opening minutes of play, South Dakota’s freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor fended off shots from Kat Lewis, Cloe Lacasse and Jade Grimm. Viktor was able to make stops on the quick attack initially, but committed an own goal after a corner kick by senior Morgan Showalter in the 15th minute of the game to give Iowa the early lead.
The Hawkeyes generated many opportunities following the first goal, but were unable to convert another shot on target until junior Dana Dalrymple chipped one in from steps behind the goal line at 29:04. Dalrymple’s short shot was made possible after Lacasse drew the defense and goalkeeper away from the net to the left side of the field. Lacasse fed the ball into Dalrymple with precision, splitting the defenders and catching the keeper off balance.
Iowa carried the 2-0 lead into the half time break. The Hawkeyes outshot the visitors 13-1 in the first 45 minute period. Despite Iowa’s looks at the net, it prevented many potential looks due to being offsides six times in the first half.
Lacasse wasted no time pressing the Coyote defense after the whistle to start the second half. The freshman from Sudbury, Ontario received a pass from Grimm 20 yards out and worked her way around the defense before firing a 15-yard shot into the back of the net just three minutes into the half.
Iowa’s offense rotated turns taking shots at new USD keeper, Kayla Wegman. The freshman fended off three attempts, but was unable to hold the speedy attack off through the final minutes of the half. Sophomore Ashley Catrell found an open shot from the right side after she worked around South Dakota’s back line. Catrell’s goal, the fourth of the game for Iowa, was assisted by senior Sarah Langlas.
Catrell tested Wegman’s abilities with back-to-back shots on goal following her score in the 86th minute. Wegman kept the ball out of the net, but the defense was unable to clear the ball fast enough. Sophomore Jess Yagla took aim at the goal as the clock wound down. Her shot was blocked, but junior Allie Adam was right there to bury the rebounded ball into the net with 2:02 left in the game.
The Black and Gold earned the shutout win behind 27 total shots and a 90 minute effort shared by the trio of Iowa goalkeepers.
Senior Emily Moran tallied 56:50 minutes in goal, earning the win and improving her career win total to 29. Moran made two saves. Freshmen keepers Kiley Beck and Caitlin Schnorbach recorded 16:45 and 16:25 minutes between the posts, respectively. Beck made one save.
“Today, the result was what we wanted, but we wanted to process to be a little bit better with our possessions,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “Our patience in the attack could have been a little bit better as well. In saying that, that might be getting a little bit picky, but as we get closer to Wednesday’s game versus an instate team and closer to games that we have coming up, we want to have the process of the game be a little bit better.”
Rainey and his squad host Northern Iowa Wednesday (Sept. 14). The final nonconference game of the season is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time. Sunday Sept. 18, Iowa opens the Big Ten season at home against Illinois.
