Hawk Talk Daily: Random Thoughts

IOWA CITY, Iowa — – Random thoughts on a Sunday in the Heartland…

The sun came up this morning. That’s a good thing. It’s a really good thing, particularly after a loss on any Saturday during the fall. At my core, I’m a fan just like you and I don’t mind admitting to that. Sure, my occupation also requires me to be a little bit more…but I think I’m like most fans who are truly engaged: I’m anxious for kickoff and hold my breath on each snap and cast a gaze at the coaching staff for signs of assurance that all is well. The day I stop being a fan will be a bad day as far as I’m concerned.

If you’re a regular reader, you also know that in addition to being a fan, I’m also a half-filled water glass guy. I pretty much have the Hawkeyes winning pretty much every contest…football, basketball, softball, you name it. Losses are tough…but inside each are some things worth savoring including, from yesterday’s football game, the performances of Keenan Davis and Mike Meyer. Sure, there’s work to be done. The head coach told us so. And, if you’re a regular reader, you also know that I listen pretty closely. A guy named Hayden once told me that history is a pretty good guide which is why this landed on hawkeyesports.com last night: HERE.

Speaking of getting it done, the Iowa field hockey team is beginning to look like its old self. Tracey Greisbaum’s squad rolled to a 7-0 win yesterday, a win that pushed the nationally ranked Hawkeyes to 5-1 in 2011 with the only loss coming on the road to No. 2 North Carolina. Gee, isn’t it amazing what a little experience can do for a team?

Speaking of getting it done, No. 2: Ron Rainey’s UI soccer team aims for win No. 7 in a row today at 1 p.m. at the Iowa Soccer Field. I’m not sure where that start ranks in the history of our women’s soccer program, but it’s impressive and no doubt will give the Hawkeyes some confidence as the head into their Big Ten Conference opener next Sunday against Illinois.

Speaking of getting it done, No. 3: Sharon Dingman’s Iowa volleyball team has won four of its last five matches including all three of this weekend’s Iowa Invitational, a run that include a five-set victory over Oakland in the tourney’s championship match last night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa goes on the road next week before opening Big Ten Conference play the last weekend in September in Iowa City. Here’s a link to the Hawkeyes’ schedule: HERE. I invite you to check ’em out some time. It’s a bargain and it’s fun and, when it’s a Big Ten match, it’s really, really good volleyball.

Plans are coming together very nicely for ANF Day at Kinnick on Oct. 15 including some special activities at Carver to give fans an option or two in addition to tailgating all day prior to the 6 p.m. kickoff against Northwestern. By the way, have you registered for the Ultimate ANF Fan Experience? If not, go HERE and throw your hat in the ring. It doesn’t cost anything.

Can you think of a time when Iowa was taller than it is today at the receiver positions? McNutt is 6-foot-4. David is 6-foot-3. And then there is tight end C. J. Fiedorowicz, who snared his first reception as a Hawkeye yesterday in Ames. Frankly, I thought that pass was thrown a wee little bit too high but, then again, C.J. stands 6-feet, 7-inches tall and has a really good pair of mitts. Wow. That’s a target!

The 7-day forecast is predicting almost perfect college football weather at Kinnick next Saturday: 60s and partly cloudy. I think fans of the Hawkeyes are deserving of that given what Mother Nature threw at ’em at the home opener. Also, if you’re heading to Kinnick, remember the Pitt game is the annual “Be Bold, Wear Gold” game. Here’s a link to herkyslockerroom.com to help you build out your wardrobe: HERE.

I’m sure you’re aware, but I’ll say it anyway: Today is the 10th anniversary of 9-11. Also, think about saying a quick prayer today for former Hawkeye Brett Greenwood.

Go Hawks!
