Hawkeyes Announce Team Captains

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa swimming and diving program announced its team captains for the men’s and women’s squads Tuesday. The program also officially began its training for the 2011-12 season.

The men’s squad will be led by senior Ryan Phelan, junior Jordan Huff and sophomore Kyle Noser. Phelan served as team co-captain last season and was Big Ten runner-up in the 50-free (19.75). Huff and Phelan were both members of the 400 free relay that placed 15th at the 2011 NCAA Championships and earned All-America honors. Noser had a breakthrough rookie season. His best time in the 400 IM (3:53.57) ranks fourth in school history.

Seniors Daniela Cubelic and Danielle Carty and sophomore Haley Gordon will represent the women’s squad. Cubelic was a team co-captain last season when she set the school record in the 100 back (54.32) that led off the record-setting 400 medley relay (3:41.87) at the Big Ten Championships. Carty’s best time in the 100 back (55.17) ranks third on Iowa’s top performers list, and she was captain alongside Cubelic last season. Gordon led the team in the 200 fly (2:03.35) and 400 IM (4:22.04) in 2010-11 and posted 18 top-three finishes.

The Hawkeyes will hold their annual Black and Gold Intraquad meet on Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool. Following the intrasquad meet the team will open up Big Ten competition Oct. 20 at Wisconsin.
