Molnar Closes ITA All-American Championships With Win

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — University of Iowa senior Sonja Molnar ended a successful run at the ITA All-American Championships with a 6-0, 3-6, 10-7 victory over Anais Dallara of Long Beach State on Thursday. Dallara was a first-team All-Big West selection in 2010 after posting a 27-10 singles record. Molnar, ranked No. 65 in the ITA preseason poll, improved to 2-1 at the ITA All-American Championships and 6-1 overall on the season. The tournament was held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Dallara was Molnar’s third quality opponent at the event. Molnar fell 6-2, 6-3 to UCLA’s McCall Jones in the first round of the Qualifying Draw. McCall was the No. 14 overall seed and ranked No. 33 in the ITA preseason poll. Molnar rebounded to top Rachael White of Illinois, 6-3, 7-5, in the opening round of the Qualifying Consolation Draw. The win was Molnar’s first of the season against a ranked opponent. White was ranked No. 67 in the ITA preseason poll.

Molnar played in the ITA All-American Championships for the third time in her career. The Guelph, Ontario, native finished with a 7-6 career tournament record. Eleven of her 13 matches were against ranked opponents. Molnar posted a 3-3 record in 2010 and a 2-2 record in 2009.

Molnar will rejoin her Hawkeye teammates to compete at the ITA Regionals in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 20-24.
