COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Iowa field hockey team blanked No. 18 Ohio State, 3-0, Saturday at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus, Ohio. Iowa, ranked 17th nationally, is 9-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play. The win, which spoiled “Senior Day” for the Buckeyes, ends Ohio State’s (8-6, 2-1) six-game win streak.

The match can be seen as a tape delay on the Big Ten Network tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CT).

“We were opportunistic,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Our penalty corners were very effective. It was a great team win and we need to use the momentum for tomorrow’s game.”

Aubrey Coleman scored at the 24:51 mark to give the Black and Gold a 1-0 advantage. The sophomore notched her third goal of the season off a pass from junior Sarah Drake. The Hawkeyes led at the break, 1-0.

Jessica Barnett extended the Iowa lead to 2-0 at the 43:06 mark with her first goal of the season. The junior scored from the right side of the circle off a pass from fellow junior Geena Lesiak.

Iowa closed the door on the Buckeyes in the 53rd minute. Barnett notched her second score of the contest from the top of the circle on a corner. Lesiak and sophomore Niki Schultheis were credited with assists.

Junior goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw recorded 11 saves to lead the Iowa defense, recording her fifth shutout of the season.

Iowa (9-3, 2-2) continues action tomorrow when it travels to face Ohio in a non-conference contest at 11 a.m. (CT).
