Hawkeyes in 10th at U.S. Collegiate Championship

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in 10th place through two rounds at the 2011 U.S. Collegiate Championship. The Hawkeyes posted a second round of 291 (+3), bringing their 36-hole score to 584 (+8). Georgia Tech is leading the 14-team field with a mark of 10-under par 566. In its sixth year, the U.S. Collegiate Championship is being played on the par-72 Lakeside Course at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.

Senior Barrett Kelpin and sophomore Steven Ihm are currently tied for 16th with 36-hole totals of one-under par 143. Kelpin started the day tied for 21st after an opening round of even par 72. He was two-over through four holes but recorded five birdies in a six-hole stretch, bringing his second round total to three-under through 10. Kelpin found three more bogies on the back nine but gained a stroke back with a birdie on the par-4, 15th hole. He finished with a second round mark of one-under 71.

After an impressive opening round of four-under 68, Ihm struggled to find a rhythm in his second round. He carded 13 holes at even par or better, including three birdies, but found trouble on a handful of holes and finished with a second round of 75 (+3). Ihm and Kelpin are four strokes out of the lead with one round to play.

Senior Brad George shaved eight strokes off his first round score and is tied for 51st place with a two-round total of 150 (+6). With three birdies on the front nine, George made the turn at one-under on the round and played consistent golf to close. George lost a stroke with a bogie on 17 but picked it back up with a birdie on 18, finishing the round at one-under par 71.

Freshman Ian Vandersee posted four birdies to record a second round of 74 (+2). He is tied for 60th with a 36-hole mark of 152 (+8). Senior Chris Brant posted a day two total of 78 (+6) and is tied for 62nd with a score of 153 (+9).
