IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers for the first time since 1997 in an exciting meet at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool Friday night. The Hawkeyes claimed the victory over Minnesota with a score of 160.5-139.5, which now puts Iowa 3-0 on the season.
Dustin Rhoads, Duncan Partridge, Byron Butler and Ryan Phelan started off the momentum for the Hawkeyes with a win in the 200 medley relay. The squad posted a winning time of 1:28.98, which was fast enough to set a new pool record in the event.
Following the relay, sophomore Manuel Belzer’s placed second in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:14.84. His time marks a collegiate best and ranks fifth overall in the school history.
This week’s Big Ten swimmer of the week, Ryan Phelan set a pool record in the 50 free with a time of 19.90. Phelan previously held the record (20.20), which he set Oct. 8 at Iowa’s annual black and gold intrasquad meet and went on to tie the record Oct. 29 against Michigan State.
Senior Paul Gordon and Jordan Huff took the top-two spots in the 200 free. Gordon touched the wall first in 1:37.74, while Huff finished second (1:39.31). Following the 200 free, Rhoads and Grant Betulius went on to place first and second in the 100 back with times of 48.98 and 49.04, respectively.
Gordon recorded his second individual first place finish on the day in the 100 free. Gordon touched the wall in 44.07 seconds. Partridge finished behind Gordon to claim second place with a time of 45.09. Byron Butler claimed an individual first place finish in the 200 back with his time of 1:46.58. Betulius posted the second fastest time in the event at 1:48.77.
Gordon and Minnesota’s Kyler Van Swol were neck-and-neck the last leg of the 100 fly. With the crowd cheering loud and on their feet, Gordon was able to just touch out Van Swol with a time of 48.30, while Van Kwol touched the wall at 48.37.
Hawkeye diver Osvel Molina earned third place finishes on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard with scores of 298.43 and 296.55, respectively. Teammate Dylan Avery finished sixth in the 1-meter (223.66) and 3-meter (167.33) events.
Going into the final event, the Hawkeyes led the Gophers 149.5- 133.5. Partridge, Phelan, Huff and Gordon sealed the victory over the Gophers with a win in the event. The quartet won the event with a time of 2:58.17, which set a new pool record.
The Hawkeyes return to action Nov. 18 when they host Purdue and Ohio State. The meet is set to start at 5 p.m.
