Stoughton Named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

Nov. 8, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman swimmer Becky Stoughton was named the Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. It is her first career honor.

It is Stoughton’s second accolade of the day, as she was earlier tabbed as the Division I National Swimmer of the Week by collegeswimming.com.

Stoughton earned the honor after recording first place finishes in the 1,000-free (9:39.44), 500-free (4:47.18) and 400-IM (4:17.60) on Nov. 4 in a dual meet against Minnesota. Her time in the 1,000-free broke her previous school record by 11 seconds, while her 500-free and 400-IM were school and pool records as well as NCAA “B” qualifying times.

In the first four meets of her Iowa career, Stoughton has set 12 total Iowa and pool records.

Stoughton is the first Hawkeye swimmer to garner the Swimmer of the Week honor this season, and the first since Katrina Tour on Dec. 14, 2010.

Iowa returns to action Nov. 18, hosting a dual meet against Purdue an at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
